White Oak Wood Flooring Grades

White oak has open grain and can range from light gray to warm brown shades. French white oak was made for the flooring of the palace of versailles.

The two most common types of character grade wood are white oak and black walnut.

White oak wood flooring grades. White oak flooring had its zenith of popularity in the late 19th and early 20th century during the arts & crafts period where white oak was used for everything from flooring to trim & paneling to furniture. A denser, slightly darker overall wood with a less prominent grain than red oak, white oak is a tan to brown color with no pinks or reds. Grades of rustic and premium available or a mixture to enjoy the colour and grain variation of rustic balanced with the exquisite.

Solid white oak flooring can be sanded and refinished up to seven times over the life of the floor. These designs emphasize the natural color & beauty of these woods. The four common cuts used for flooring include plain sawn, quarter sawn, rift sawn and live sawn.

Both,white oak and black walnut hardwood planks, have their own distinct characteristics but they’re equally beautiful. All of our unfinished hardwood flooring is 3/4 solid kiln dried and nwfa certified or better. Select, #1 common, and #2 common, which is also known as “rustic” grade, or “builder’s” grade.

Many times, no 3 common will have a mix of no 1 and no 2 along with some other pieces of hardwood that simply don’t hold up to the higher grades. To f where there are “shakes” and “splits at the end and large dead knots that have fallen out and a large variation in colour. Select, number 1 common and number 2 common.

As we manufacture all our own wood flooring we are able to select out very carefully the raw material in the following grades. Especially pertaining to oak hardwood flooring, the 3 most commonly used grades are: Solid 3/4″ thick, random lengths to 10 and up to 12 ft long!

White oak is a beautiful option in lower grades that are not perfectly clear. We carry rift and quartered, quartered only and rift only as well as. White oak 3/4 x 3 character grade flooring.

For oak flooring, there are 3 main grades: Like all domestic species, solid oak flooring is given one of several grades: The various grades of wood are not intended to be a measure of board quality, but rather to capture the physical variations in the wood.

Meanwhile, black walnut planks have a deep, brown shade that makes for extremely attractive home flooring. When it comes to quality, all of our grades are of equal quality, stability and performance. Select grade is generally considered the highest grade as it has the least color variation.

The panel on the left is of common nofma #2 white oak. For example, knots of varying sizes add beauty and dimension to the wood. If you are looking for rift and quartered white oak wood flooring we have it. We have all grades available including select & better, #1 common, character, #2 common and #3 common. The north american white oak products are made using domestic woods such as rift & quarter sawn white oak.

This grade definitely has character. What we show and what you see in our flooring is done with careful consideration. Select & better, #1 common, #2 common, #3 common (also known as utility or cabin grade ),.

Classic grain will be predominant and vertical grain is accepted. Each grade has its own particular characteristics and appearance. Both white oak (pictured above) and red oak come in a variety of grades based on overall appearance.

Our engineered floor is available in a 5/8” [with a 4mm wear layer] or 3/4” [with a 4.5mm wear layer] thickness. Unlimited mineral streaks, character marks, ray flecks, cracks and splits are permitted, as are sound, patched and open knots. They just assume all oak flooring is the same.
